Celebrating our peat!

Our 'Peat Fest' on the 7th May was a lovely celebration of what's beneath our feet. Our art exhibition by many wonderful local artists featured the extrordinary pollen grains found buried in peat, which tell us so much about local lansdcapes, wildlife and human influence over the last 8,000 years. Bread-making on a peat fire showed how local people were able to use peat from the fens for fuel, and displays, games and guided walks and talks gave our many visitors an great introduction to why peat matters. The event was beautifully decorated with fen-themed bunting by local primary school children.

A great winter tradition

was continued for the 14th consecutive year with the LOHP's new year walk to shake off Christmas excess and enjoy our beautiful wintery valley. Nearly 60 people and various well-behaved dogs walked from Redgrave, via its historic church and quiet lanes to the fens of Waveney/Little Ouse valley, returning to Redgrave Activities Centre for a warming lunch of homemade soup. If you missed it, make sure you join us next year!

We're excitied to announce that the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation have awarded the LOHP a £60,000 grant over two years to employ a conservation manager. Rob Martyr has been appointed as our first ever member of staff and started work for us on the 19th of June. Rob will oversee day to day running of the project, which now manages 71 hectares of land for conservation and public access. His appointment will allow our trustees to spend more time developing the project and encouraging local involvement. The new grant will also enable us to continue to publish our newsletter - News from the Ouse - three times a year and distribute it to all households in the local parishes. We are very grateful to the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation for their generous support for this milestone in the LOHP's development.
